Background to The CDP

In 1994 a group of local people started a process which eventually led to the establishment of the Tralee Community Development Project in Rock St. New members joined in 1995 and together they looked at tasks such as forming a limited company, seeking suitable premises and devising a work plan for the project. In 1996 staff was employed for the first time.

There are now in the region of 190 community development projects like Tralee CDP spread across the country. They are funded by the National Development Plan. The National Community Development Programme is administered by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.Voluntary Management members are all people who live in the area who give of their time, energy and skills in an effort to improve quality of life for everyone in the CDP's catchment area.

Mission Statement

Tralee Community Development Project’s mission statement is to promote co-operation between different groups in the community, to combine resources, regenerate the community and empower people to highlight and address their own needs so that they can become catalysts for social change in favor of those who benefit least.

Tralee CDP Objectives

Set up structures which will improve the quality of community life in the catchment area.

To make adult & community education more relevant and accessible to people in our community.

Contribute to the development of supports for people in our community who experience discrimination & oppression.

Co-operate people & groups, focusing particularly on the following areas to involve them in the project: Shanakill & Rahoonane, Urban Terrace, Connolly Park, Casement Ave, Rock Park Ave, and St. Brendan's Park.

To put in place good family supports and related activities.

Ensure equality of access, opportunity & participation for all users.

To initiate and support a wide range of low cost community based developmental activities for young people under 12years, preferably with parental involvement.

To listen to groups and develop solutions together.

Work with the community to tackle the root causes of poverty and inequality.

Develop an effective model of voluntary management so as to facilitate the community's response to its own needs.
